Over the years, many Rwandan artists in music, dance, and entertainment have relocated to foreign countries, hoping to find better opportunities. However, only a few have managed to stay relevant and active in the showbiz industry abroad. Why is it so difficult for Rwandan creatives to continue their careers outside the country?
Iwacu Times explores the challenges Rwandan artists face while trying to sustain their careers abroad and the inspiring story of Benjamin Mugisha, known as The Ben, who overcame these obstacles.
The Ben moved to the US in 2010, already a famous name in Rwanda, where his songs dominated the charts. Once in the US, he faced the challenge of balancing his passion for music with the reality of life abroad. But despite the odds, he thrived. In 2012, The Ben’s hit song I’m in Love was released, leading to his recognition at the 2012 Salax Music Awards in Rwanda, where he became the first-ever recipient of the Best Music Artist in the Diaspora award.
His achievements continued to grow, including multiple awards such as Best Afro R&B Singer and Best Male Artist. The Ben was also invited to perform at the United Nations headquarters, solidifying his place on the global stage.
While The Ben’s story is inspiring, it highlights the reality that many Rwandan artists face when they move abroad. Pursuing a music career outside Rwanda is far from easy. The cost of producing music in the US, Europe, or Canada is significantly higher than in Rwanda. Booking a standard studio session abroad requires saving up thousands of dollars, whereas Rwanda offers many affordable studios with talented producers.
Additionally, the high cost of living and demanding work schedules make it difficult for artists to focus on their music. Most Rwandan artists abroad must take on regular jobs whether as factory workers, truck drivers, or professionals leaving little time for their creative pursuits. As a result, many talented musicians and performers are forced to put their careers on hold.
After several years in the US, The Ben has returned to Rwanda, where he continues to inspire as one of the country’s most beloved artists. He is involved in music and business, serving as a brand ambassador for major companies like Airtel Rwanda. The Ben’s ability to navigate both his personal and professional life is a testament to his dedication and hard work, and he remains a source of pride for Rwandans worldwide.
