As the curtains closed on the National Dialogue Council, Umushyikirano 2024, the final day proved to be a poignant reflection on Rwanda’s remarkable journey of unity and resilience, especially in the wake of the devastating 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and exploring the depth of Rwanda’s journey, the dynamic role of its youth, and the visionary leadership that propels the nation towards a future defined by unity, resilience, and progress.
With a spotlight on the last 30 years, the Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, Dr Jean Damascene Bizimana, took center stage, providing a comprehensive presentation that underscored key interventions, pivotal decisions, and the current status of national unity and resilience. The overarching theme of Kwibuka30 permeated the discussions, commemorating the resilience of a nation that has risen from the ashes.
In his presentation, Dr. Jean Damascene emphasized the actions undertaken on a global scale to acknowledge the genocide perpetrated against the Tutsis and outlined the existing
“On September 20, 2023, during the 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, the monuments of Murambi, Bisesero, Nyamata, and Gisozi were globally recognized. This significant acknowledgment aimed to impart a profound lesson to the world about the history of the genocide against the Tutsis.”, said Min. Dr. Jean Damascene.
In addressing challenges, he discussed a troubling phenomenon termed TUTSIPHOBIA, an ideology rooted in hatred that was instigated by the Congolese government. The manner in which it was orchestrated resembled an open plan, reminiscent of the strategy employed during the planning and execution of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda.
The agenda also was diverse and engaging, featuring a thought-provoking panel discussion on “Youth leadership in shaping Rwanda’s future.” The Minister of Youth and Art Development, Min. Abdallah Utumatwishima, alongside other esteemed panelists, delved into the pivotal role of the youth in steering the trajectory of the country. Their insights, aspirations, and initiatives painted a vivid picture of Rwanda forging ahead into a promising future.
The pinnacle of the event arrived with the closing remarks delivered by His Excellency President Kagame, encapsulating the spirit of Umushyikirano and setting the tone for the continued progress of this resilient nation.
In his speech, President Paul Kagame has urged leaders in the nation to approach their responsibilities with diligence and not rely on external assistance or view the country as a charity case. He underscored the importance of self-reliance and warned against putting the nation in a position where it depends on pity or assistance from others.
“I am not suggesting a refusal of support from those willing to assist us on our path; rather, it’s crucial to chart our own course first, and then others can provide the necessary support,” stated the head of state.
He emphasized that when a leader neglects their duties, it creates an empty space that may be occupied by individuals who may not align with the same goals and aspirations.
The National Dialogue Counsel Umushyikirano not only addressed the challenges and triumphs of the past but also charted a course towards a promising future marked by unity and progress.
